Dr. Shashi Tharoor, MP has announced that the Railways have issued final orders allotting funds amounting to Rs.10 crores for development of Thiruvananthapuram Central Station during 2012‐13. Dr. Tharoor said that this major fund allocation was done under a special collaborative scheme between the Ministry of Railways and the Union Ministry of Tourism for creating modern, international level infrastructure and facilities at selected stations.
The funds are to be utilized for undertaking 14 major items of work for infrastructure development, augmenting passenger facilities and transforming existing levels of customer care, cleanliness and punctuality. Dr. Shashi Tharoor said that the allotment of Rs. 10 crores through this special scheme is a welcome development for the people of the constituency since it will result in tangible improvements on the ground in a relatively short time unlike other schemes which are funded purely by the Railways through their own resources which are currently under tremendous strain.
The items of work that will be undertaken are: Improvements in the facade of the station building (Rs. 50 lakhs); Improvement in the circulating area so as to ensure proper entry and exit of vehicles, etc. and adequate parking space (Rs. 70 lakhs); Installation of a lighting tower at an appropriate place for proper illumination and improvement and for modern, cost‐effective lighting arrangements at the platforms, concourses, etc. (Rs. 30 lakhs); Installation of lifts/escalators and subways for access to platforms/island platforms (Rs. 3.5 crores) Arrangements for handicapped‐friendly approaches to stations and platforms (Rs. 30 lakhs) ; purchase of modern trolleys with brakes (Rs. 30 lakhs); Cloak Room facilities witth special emphasis on individual lock facility for tourists (Rs. 50 lakhs); Renovated, modern Pay & Use toilets and making provision of garbage bins, rest room facilities for both ladies and gents (Rs. 80 lakhs) ; Waiting rooms and retiring rooms with modern furniture and enough benches for waiting passengers, provision of TV/announcement systems (Rs. 70 lakhs); Passenger guidance system including signages and coach indication boards and setting up of International Tourist Bureaus (Rs. 50 lakhs) ; Improvement of platform surface (Rs,.20 lakhs); Improvement of booking and Enquiry Offices (Rs. 50 lakhs); Executive lounges of international standard (Rs. 1 crore); and Availability of Refreshment Rooms/Jan Ahaar/AVMs/Food Plazas, etc. with multi‐cuisine food (Rs. 20 lakhs).
Dr. Shashi Tharoor said that this was a very important initiative for Thiruvananthapuram by the Govt. of India having the potential to transform Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station into a world‐class public facility for meeting the needs of the city which is presently undergoing major changes on all fronts of developmental activity befitting its status as the capital of the State.
