The Temple Entry Proclamation by Maharaja Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma was a milestone towards building a secular India and the fulfilment of Gandhi’s dream. To remember that historic day people of Travancore build a statue of Sree Chithira Thirunal near Sreekanteswaram temple. The bronce made statue was built in Italy and brought to India before Second World War. Later a Children’s park was formed surrounding the statue and Thiruvananthapuram Corporation gave the name Sree Chithira Thirunal park.
Now the children’s park is no longer a park; it has become a parking lot for private cars, vans, buses and base for anti-social elements. Its sad to say that the statue is not properly maintained by the authorities. The eyes of the statue had gems; today there are only two holes.
We have to give due respect to our beloved Maharaja and its the responsibility of each and every individual to keep historic monuments clean and tidy. Lets hope the authorities will take measures to give a face lift to the Statue and the Children’s park.
